WIAW #58: Eat Your Meat and Greens

This WIAW, I’m sharing some meals that are pretty typical for me, as well as a dinner that showcases some newer food choices. The greens are nothing new, but since my elimination diet and subsequent step back from grains like oats and rice (and attempt to cut down on dairy, which sometimes works better than others) I’ve started eating some things that I haven’t touched since I was in preschool, if ever. I went from eating just fish and poultry to incorporating duck on occasion when I was in college in England. I threw pork/ham back into the mix last year, because as my dad says, it’s “the other white meat”. And very recently, I’ve dipped a toe in the waters of “real meat” which you’ll see if you read all the way through this day’s dinner…

May Monthly Recap

This May didn’t fly by anywhere near as fast as last year, when the month was consumed by law school graduation and the beginning of bar study. It also felt a little longer than the preceding March and April. Maybe it’s because of our Maine vacation, or because I got sick afterwards and took some time off running, or even just because it took the weather awhile to settle into true start-of-summer sunshine. Whatever it was, I’m happy to be heading into June, because there’s lots of excitement on the calendar. Before we get to that, read on for my May monthly recap!

Weekly Workouts and Memorial Day Weekend

I’ve always loved celebrating Memorial Day. It isn’t the biggest holiday, but it does mark the start of summer in more ways than one. This year, the weather warmed up rapidly, so it seems like it really crept up on us, but all that meant is earlier morning runs and lots of ice cream to cool off. I’ll recap my weekly workouts first and then get to Memorial Day weekend.

Touring the Met with Museum Hack

A few Saturdays ago, I took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for something a little different than my usual wander-and-ponder. I was invited to take a VIP tour by Museum Hack, a company that operates tours at major museums in several American cities and prides itself on offering non-traditional, subversive, and even snarky looks at the art and the institutions. Brett and I decided to take part in a Saturday evening adventure, and we both came away with a few new thoughts about a museum we’ve been to many times before.

WIAW # 57: Cook It In A Pan

You may have seen these recent eats on Instagram, but in all the time it took to recap my Maine adventures, I didn’t get around to sharing my eats for the past two weeks. This WIAW for a Wednesday back in NYC is the time to fix that! Breakfast was a one pan scramble with three eggs, Swiss cheese, sautéed spinach, spinach and garlic chicken sausage, and a slice of Udi’s gluten free toast. I don’t eat “gluten free” foods very much but my dad bought a loaf of Udi’s on sale at Costco and gave it to me so I’ve been enjoying a slice with breakfast or brinner for the past week.

Weekly Workouts and Updates 5/16-5/23

Sitting down to write this, it feels like forever since I’ve done a weekly workouts recap. It has been a few weeks, and that’s because I came down with a bad cold the last day of our trip to Maine and took about a week off, just getting back into it this past week. My mileage is slowly climbing upward, and I am looking forward to beginning marathon training in June. Let’s get to the weekly workouts, and I’ll share a few scenes from the weekend as well!

My Guide to Gluten Free Maine

To wrap up sharing my recent trip to Maine, I thought I’d collect my experiences eating gluten free in one post. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the amazing places you can find gluten free goodies or other allergy free treats. It’s simply my own guide to gluten free Maine, an overview of where I ate in the places we happened to be in – Portland, Freeport, Yarmouth, and Kennebunkport.

Why I Love A Maine Vacation

There are many reasons why I love a Maine vacation. Getting to run along the Atlantic. Goofing off by the Bean Boot. Eating all the delicious food, the burgers and baked goods, special meals out, and ice cream galore. But I think the best part is the feeling of being totally at peace, a feeling I had on our day in Kennebunkport and have had in the past in this place. To me, taking a vacation means truly getting away from everything that weighs you down in daily life, and for some reason, I was able to spend more moments doing just that in Maine than I have been anywhere else.

A Beautiful Day in Kennebunkport

I hope you’re not tired of my steady stream of Maine-related posts, because I’ve got a couple more coming at you. Today’s is about Kennebunkport, a town that holds a special place in my heart. I visited Kennebunkport with my family while I was growing up, both in summer at the height of the “season” and in winter when the inn we stayed at was covered in snow. Literally, we once stayed there and got snowed in during a blizzard. This time around, there were no snowflakes, but there was sunshine, gorgeous ocean views, seafood, and ice cream in abundance. Nothing more needed for a perfect Monday. Or any day, really, but especially Monday when you’re on vacation and it feels great not to be back to the daily grind 🙂

Running the Portland Eastern Promenade

I tend to keep running while I’m on vacation, because I enjoy it, it’s a nice way to start the day, and you can even use your run to explore a city (like I did in London last summer). While I was on vacation in Maine, I didn’t go for a long run, but I did enjoy a 5ish mile run each morning I was in Portland, kick-starting my appetite for eating all the burgers and cookies, sampling the ice cream spots, and enjoying my first dinner at the amazing Fore Street restaurant. There was no better way to greet the morning in this port city than coming down the hill from our B&B in the West End, running the Portland Eastern Promenade along the waterfront, and looping back uphill for a nice cool-down stroll. After stopping at the bakery for a breakfast cookie of course…
