This week has been full of reminders that sometimes, it’s best to take a step back and take stock of your life, and find joy in the little things. It’s so easy to fall into a pattern where everything seems mundane. Instead of doing that, I’m thinking out loud about a few of the moments I’ve recently had that brightened up my day and made me feel like everything’s going to work out in the end!
Yesterday, watching the last moments of the sunrise over the East River as I jogged up to meet everyone at November Project, I was reminded again how shockingly beautiful nature is. Unadorned and unaltered by mankind, it’s bigger and brighter than all of us (and we should work hard to keep it that way!)
Later in the morning, I saw a group of the cutest puppies on my way out the door. If you can believe it, dog-walkers in New York handle twice as many pups as this at one time – this was the group for the left-hand leash! It’s so nice for the dogs that the weather is better, they can run and play in the park to their heart’s content without worrying about salt in their paws.
After a doctor’s appointment, I headed to Astor House, the headquarters of the New York Junior League, where the Forum for Nonprofits was taking place. I’m happy to say it was a great success! I then traveled downtown to meet a friend for a lovely catch-up chat over iced tea, since I had the rest of the afternoon off. We went to the Grey Dog, keeping that puppy theme going. I had a refreshing mint iced tea, which was delicious!
Later on, I wandered around the Union Square market, enjoying all the stalls. I especially appreciated one devoted to apples, one of my favorite foods.
When I got home in the evening, I had some mint chocolate chip ice cream to cap off a busy day with a sweet treat. I was on a bit of a mint kick!
Throughout the day, I was reminded that life can surprise you with little moments of serendipity. I was chatting about running the Dumbo Double Dare in September, and noticed the table next to me at the Grey Dog was a map of that area.
It reminded me of when my family went on the safari at the Animal Kingdom after I ran the Disney Half Marathon, and we found out that some of the research used to create the gorilla habitat came from our own hometown.
All in all, yesterday was just a good day, and not because anything in particular was spectacular, but because a lot of little moments strung together made for a happy mood. It was a great reminder to keep embracing those little things that go your way, because life is made up of lots of little things, and it’s only later on you realize what the big picture looks like.
What are some little moments that have brightened your day recently?

I’m a big time believer in the fact that it’s the little things that add up to make the biggest difference in our lives. It’s pretty amazing what some sunshine, good coffee, and birds singing can do for my mood. Add some chocolate into there and you’ll have me busting out the happy dance 😀

Awww I loved this post! I think this is something I need to do for myself. Lately I have become way too caught up in my own life and all the crap I “need” to do.
I think that appreciating nature becomes especially important when you live in a big urban environment. The beauty of nature isn’t as readily available in cities, so we have to look harder to find it, but it always seems more precious when we do. Exposure to nature means awareness of nature, which I think many in this country severely lack.

I think so too! That’s why Central Park is one of my absolute favorite places in NYC, and why I like to escape to the country when I leave the city rather than heading to another urban area.

Sweet stuff! It’s great to take a moment and appreciate little happy moments. Fun fact – I used to work at Disney in Orlando and I love Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Also, I was in the Junior League in Orlando too! hehehe Happy Thursday, Alyssa!
