Thoughts on Food: Now and Then

This Sunday, after my runger finally stopped raging and I had not been the nicest person to be around for a few hours in the afternoon, I got to thinking about my relationship to food a year ago, or two or five or ten, as compared to what it currently is. There’s a huge difference between now and then, and I’m grateful for it, but change didn’t happen overnight. It was gradual over time, so that sometimes I’m still surprised when I realize how far I’ve come.

WIAW #54: A Rungry Sunday

I’ve shared the depths of my runger on this blog many times, first in a WIAW last July and most recently in one featuring my New York City Half Marathon weekend eats. Today’s WIAW is from another rungry Sunday, this past one, when I ran the MORE Women’s Half Marathon and subsequently was so demanding where food and drink were concerned that I thought my boyfriend was going to lose it. Luckily, he’s a trooper and puts up with me and my runger 🙂

More Exploring in San Diego

Good morning on this beautiful Monday! I’m happy to be safely home after my adventures in California, and I’m really looking forward to savoring the next month as summer holds on for me (and for a lot of the country, apparently). I will be heading to Nashville for a weekend to visit a good friend later in September. Otherwise it’s time to relax and take a real breather before my new job starts in October. But I’m not done sharing my travel adventures with you yet – we left off yesterday with my first two days in a very sunny San Diego, and today the tales of exploring in San Diego continue, this time with a visit to a lighthouse, a beach, and a lovely resort town. All familiar to a New England girl, but with a California twist!

Eating Gluten Free in England

Hello and happy Wednesday! I returned yesterday from my fortnight-long excursion across the pond, and I hope you all enjoyed following along with me as much as I loved being there. In case you missed anything so far…

My Pond Hopping Trip

Part 2: Hiking and Eating in the Lake District

10 Tips For Running in London

Tomorrow I’ll be sharing my further thoughts on the trip as a whole, but since this is the day of the week when lots of us like to showcase our eats, I figured I’d take the opportunity to talk about what it was like to eat gluten free in England, both in London and in the countryside.

Five Things Friday: Sweet Summer Study Snacks

I’ve shared my favorite frozen treats, fruits, and such with you before, but while I was studying for the past few months, there were a few discoveries that lent a bit of sweetness to life and made the hours more bearable. These summer study snacks would be awesome additions to anyone’s summer list, whether you’re actually studying or just want some new go-tos. All will definitely remain in my own repertoire! So I’m linking up with Heather and Katie to share them with you this Friday.

Five Things Friday: Frozen Treats

And we’re back with Five Things Friday! I haven’t done one of these in awhile, mostly because there’s been so much else to talk about here with you. But now that I’m in the thick of bar studying, it’s about time to share some of the the frozen treats that sweeten up my daily eats. You had to know this one was coming. Now that June is in full swing, it’s high season for ice cream and other such sweets. Whether it’s a few scoops of my favorite flavors at the local ice cream shop, making my own sundae at home, or trying out new frozen treats, I am taking full advantage.

1. Ice Cream Cones:

One of my favorite activities on a summer evening is taking a trip to the local ice cream shop for a scoop of one of my favorite flavors. At Ferris Acres I can even nab a gluten free cone! Wherever I go, I always top my treat with rainbow sprinkles for some extra pizzazz. I tend to choose my favorite flavors consistently – these include Moose Tracks and Strawberry at Emack & Bolio’s, Raspberry Fudge Swirl with a sweet cream base at Ferris Acres, Cherry Vanilla at Deborah Ann’s, and pretty much any berry-and-dark-chocolate-chunk combo you can think of anywhere.

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

Welcome to the first WIAW of June, featuring the Monday kickoff of my second week of studying for the bar. I’ve got a bit less time to be creative in the kitchen around here, but while that means many repeat eats, they’re still delicious and (mostly) healthy, and I have managed to sneak in some seasonal specials, despite the very unseasonable weather that ushered in the week.

Pre-run breakfast: A Peanut Butter Puff-in-a-Mug with some strawberries and iced coffee, eaten at 8am while reading the paper and reading a few blogs. Like I said last Thursday, I’ve been eating this dessert-for-breakfast a LOT lately because it’s quick and easy. And my muffin-making has been lower than usual because I don’t want to heat my apartment or house by using the stove!

WIAW #4: From PB&J to Gourmet

WHAT-I-ATE-WEDNESDAY-NEW-BUTTON-PEAS-AND-CRAYONS

Welcome to this week’s What I Ate Wednesday, hosted by Jenn at Peas and Crayons. This post features Monday’s eats. I think my PB&J cravings and insatiable appetite that day were the result of doing my first long run on Sunday since the NYC Half (I jogged to the start of the 10k, making it 8 miles and change). I’m always extra-hungry for a few days after one of those. In fact, after this morning’s November Project PR Day, I’m not sure my tummy is going to STOP growling! The sunrise was a beautiful way to usher in April…but now I need to make some breakfast to start my monthly eats off right. So without further ado…

Breakfast: I was really craving PB&J Monday morning. Before my run, I had a salted rice cake with a smear of Peanut Butter & Co Smooth Operator and some blueberry jam, topped with fresh blueberries. I did 5 miles in the sunshine in the park, just a nice and easy pace, and felt fabulous. Both my food and fitness for the wee hours seemed to be exactly what I needed. Then, when I got home, I mixed up a PB&J Oatmeal Cake and put it in the oven to bake while I showered and readied myself for the day. My stomach was already rumbling, so I had a peach Greek yogurt to tide me over. The oven timer couldn’t chime a moment too soon! I enjoyed my oatmeal cake with some more fresh blueberries and a crisp Pink Lady apple, and a mug of Green Mountain Wild Blueberry coffee. Scrump-diddly-umptious!

Lunch: An assortment of snacks to get me through a long afternoon of class and internship. As regular readers know, I tend to eat a lot of little things strung together during the day, bookended by a big breakfast and dinner, because I’m often on the go and dislike feeling weighed down (as I snack, my backpack gets lighter!) OR hungry (because for me, hungry = hangry). This day featured a salad of greens, cabbage, and carrots, with smoked sockeye salmon and feta cheese, topped with Annie’s honey mustard vinaigrette as my ‘lunch’ entree. I ate this with a side of baby carrots around 12:30. I ate the muffin around 2pm before leaving school for Lincoln Center, and had the apple and pretzels around 4pm while at my internship. Then I had a pre-dinner snack when I got home around 6pm and had to wait a bit for dinner as I was going out to eat with a friend. To tide me over for the hour, I had the yogurt – banana cream, with some kettle corn and blueberries crumbled in.
