A Whirlwind Weekend in Florida

I’m back from a whirlwind weekend in Florida, where I spent a day with Mickey Mouse, enjoyed my favorite allergy free Mickey treats, and got to experience another kind of family vacation for the first time. The trip was last minute. I didn’t expect to be back in Disney so soon after January’s 10k and half marathon. But with multiple birthdays and anniversaries in my boyfriend’s family, a day in the Magic Kingdom was planned to celebrate and we couldn’t pass up the chance at that. 

 

 

 

On Friday night, our flight from New York was delayed, so we didn’t end up arriving at the Swan and Dolphin where we were staying until nearly midnight. That meant a night of little sleep before a full Saturday at the Magic Kingdom, but then again, the last few times around I was running a half marathon on less than six hours! We made it to Main Street, U.S.A. a little after 9am the next morning, and promptly hit Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and a few of the rides in Fantasyland before breaking for brunch. It was different being at Disney with a family that wasn’t mine, but they love the Disney magic too, so it didn’t feel awkward acting like a kid excited to see Mickey.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The afternoon was spent alternating between rides and snacking. We took a whirl on Splash Mountain where I avoided most of the spray by using the taller males in our party as human shields, and went on a few rides like the Jungle Cruise and Cinderella’s carousel that I usually pass by. In between, trips to the Main Street Confectionery and other spots for goodies were in order. I love that at Disney I can enjoy a lot of allergy free Mickey treats, and I certainly indulged. Mickey ice cream bar, Mickey krispy treat, Mickey waffles the following morning…

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday evening, we had dinner at the Skipper’s Canteen in Adventureland. The allergy free menu had something for everyone, but I was much more excited about all the aforementioned sweets. One of the best parts of the day was when my boyfriend and I wandered over to a cart to find some Mickey bars after dinner, on our way to get everyone’s jackets out of the car as the sun had gone down and we were all wearing shorts in what became high 40s weather. We were wearing “I’m Celebrating” buttons, since everyone else had birthday and anniversary buttons. The cast member at the cart asked us what we were celebrating, and we explained that we were pretty much celebrating everyone else – and she told us we were now celebrating free Mickey ice cream!

 

 

 

 

 

 

We more than made up for it afterwards at the confectionery and the Emporium, where I was gifted a Minnie Mouse oven mitt to make lots of treats for future celebrations (but left the other hand, the Mickey side, for another trip so we have to come back) and a Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse that was just too adorable to pass up. I also found an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to give to my friend’s little boy. He’s only a few months old but I’m sure he’ll love it. I couldn’t leave Disney without getting him a little something.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Main Street Electrical Parade was pretty as ever, and the fireworks tugged at my heartstring just like they always do. Like I said before, it’s different experiencing everything with someone new. I’ve only ever been to Disney with my own family. Even in California I was with my cousin. I feel like a kid at heart there, but being there with my boyfriend made me realize how much it means that in the rest of my life, I’m really in the thick of “adulting”. Then again, I’ll never be too grown up for a Mickey treat 🙂
