I’ve been lucky to have some time over the past few weeks to dedicate to blogging as if it were a full time job. While I’d love it if that were a reality, for now blogging is a hobby that I really enjoy and hope to continue with as much as I can. There’s so much to learn, about running a blog and a website, using social media, and developing whatever passion you blog about, which in my case is mostly running and recipes but has also become more about my life in general. And I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how most of the important tools, tips and tricks I’ve picked up are courtesy of other bloggers.
When I first started blogging, I didn’t know anyone else who had a blog, except for a few friends who had used blogs to document their study abroad experiences. (Please note, I will use the word “blog” more in this post than I ever have before or will again.) I began this blog on a whim, wanting to write and share my thoughts on whatever was on my mind. Ten months later, here I am.
For the first half of that time, I was finishing up my final year of law school. I began my first term as a Junior League volunteer. I found November Project and made a few great friends (and hopefully will become better friends with more people once I start going again next week!) I blogged about recipes I’d been whipping up for myself for awhile, like banana maple muffins and my oatmeal cakes. And one rather frosty April morning, I met my friend Kaitlin at a group run and we started chatting about blogging before I fell behind (and I mean way behind, this girl is speedy, and I am, shall we say, more gently paced.)
Making a friend who was also a blogger was really fun for me. I enjoyed blogging and wanted to talk more about it. I was surprised when Kaitlin mentioned that I was the first blogger friend she had met in person before discovering that I had a blog – I didn’t realize that bloggers became friends THROUGH their blogs, or that there were in fact all sorts of blogging communities. But as I started to blog more, I also read more of other people’s blogs. I started actually following along with them and getting interested in what they were up to, and the idea of a blogger friend or ‘blend’ became more real to me.
For the past five months, I’ve been living in a kind of limbo. I graduated from law school in May, took the bar exam, turned 24, traveled to England, California, and Nashville, ran the Dumbo Double Dare and a local half marathon, and more. I was in my house studying for two months and then I was out and about, whether globetrotting or having fall fun in my hometown. Blogging has been a constant in my life during this time. I’ve checked out fully a few times, like when I was hiking in the Lake District, but for the most part I’ve found reading blogs is the best way to pass the time while sitting in an airport 🙂 I’ve become a lot more invested in my own blog and eager to learn more.
I’ve been…
Starting to figure out the mysterious concept of SEO.
Focusing more on photography, which I love but had no idea how best to approach when it comes to a blog and especially recipes.
Updating many of my recipes, like this Chocolate Chip Cinnamon Tea Cake.
Learning how to use BeFunky and PicMonkey and Canva, which are the reason I’ve made my Paleo Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies and Pumpkin Apple Spice Loaf look as good as they taste.
Joining my first blogger Facebook group (courtesy of Georgie), which is full of lovely, wonderful, creative and supportive people, none of whom I know in person but all of whom are eager to help out when I have a question.
Getting on Pinterest, which I still can’t fully grasp but hope to master a little more day by day, and just yesterday I created my first Instagram account (I’m a Luddite, or I was before this blog!)
On Monday I start my new job – my first real, permanent “big girl” job – at a big law firm in New York City. I plan to keep running, reading, writing, baking, blogging, volunteering, and having an active social life – with absolutely no idea how I’m going to fit it all in. I do know one thing. I’ll have a place to share the journey, and it’s right here.

I started my blog about a month ago and have SO much to learn too :). I am figuring it out as I go. I feel sometimes like I have to have it all together and it is not possible!! Meeting and talking to others through comments is so fun though and I love writing and sharing our lives and all the rest, we’ll figure it out!!

I’ve had 1 or 2 other, less successful, blogs on other subjects. I *think* I’m in this one for the long haul, but one of the other blogs I had I did have for years (mostly neglected).
I have no idea how you’ll keep it up as a real lawyer, but I’ll enjoy reading about it.
I met Darlene (my first 5k & more) via Facebook before I started to blog. She’s the only other blogger I’ve met in RL so far. I’d love to change that! But we’ve become friends & occasional running buddies, even though I am *extremely* gently paced (love it! I’ll have to remember it) & she’s speedy.
Good luck on your first job as a lawyer! I do know a lawyer, a much older lady, who lives in Manhattan, in the financial district. She’s extremely nice.

Congrats on starting your new job! Blogging friends are great! I moved from the US to Scotland seven months ago and I’ve met several people in person through blogging. It’s really great to connect with other people who blog! We are, like, in our own worlds sometimes about things. I thought for a few days about quitting my blog for other projects I need to focus on, but thought about how many times I have worked through something or received encouragement from the community of people I only know through my blog! Why would I want to give that up?!
Oh, and I also find Pinterest a bit more difficult to grasp. I am not much for social media on a personal level as it is, so I’m definitely lacking skills there. I’m learning a lot as I go as well! It’s great! 🙂

Blogging has been a great way to share things that are important to me. And like you said, I have learnt so many things along the way that I had no clue about. Working on my blog has been relaxing and challenging at the same time. 🙂
Good luck with your “big girl” job! Looking forward to reading about your evolution on here 🙂

Good luck with your new job! I’ve found blogging is something fun I do and a good escape if i need a break. My blog is still a hobby and I don’t think will be anything beyond that. Just like running, it’s a good distraction 🙂

Great post! I’m glad I found your blog. You and I really do seem like birds of a feather…well, except for the whole food thing. I’m pretty terrible at that 🙂 I hope you find time to keep up with the blog once life gets busy, I will miss you!
Oh man, I could write a whole post about what I learned from blogging. Hey, maybe I should just do that, what with the blogging streak and needing ideas and all. It is definitely not what I expected going in and it has been surprisingly difficult to master, but always worth it. I love that I’ve made so many friends, and it made me realize how much blogging is really based on community. If you want readers, you have to put yourself out there a little bit. I used to be in a local blogging Facebook group (its basically inactive now and it was mostly fashion bloggers), and I was surprised how many people would complain that they couldn’t get an audience, yet made little effort to read and comment on other blogs.

I hope I will keep up – I’m planning to post 3 days per week instead of 4-5, but I need balance in my life and I’m determined to keep at the things that give it to me!

Awesome lessons to learn! I’ve on and off blogged (or had an online diary) since 1998. I’ve met so many wonderful friends through the journeys. As most have dropped off now and I’m starting to get back into it I found it is so much harder than it used to be to meet and network with people! Awesome for you to be able to take the time and learn!

This is my first time reading your blog, but I love your perspective! I haven’t been blogging long so it’s good to hear and see how it could evolve! Already I’ve learned the importance to publishing a variety of content and that you have to keep the right perspective. I’m having so much fun meeting other bloggers and getting to share in their stories!

Congrats on the new job! Blogging has given me so many opportunities, but more importantly, so many friends. It’s nice to know we’re not the only ones out there like us. It helped me through college when I thought I was the only one who wasn’t a big drinker, liked going to bed and waking up early, and just needed others to remind me that I’m not crazy 😉

I think often that blogging could have been really good for me during college as well, for similar reasons (although as a coxswain for the crew team, the early to bed/rise was a little easier!). I wasn’t a big partier but tried to be and every time realized it wasn’t for me – and yet didn’t know how to be okay with that. I’m glad you had it though and that you kept at it afterwards, I love reading your posts 🙂

Goodluck at starting your new job! I m sure you will do fabulously! I just started my blog in January and am slowly starting to grow it as I put in more time- I joined Georgie’s blogger group recently too and it has really helped me to network with other bloggers like yourself! I have learned through blogging that I really like writing and sharing my thoughts with others. I am working on developing my own voice and letting my personality shine through in my blog. Cheers again to you blogging career and growth!
